Originally trained as a biologist and now residing in the Pacific Northwest, I try and combine my love of nature with a desire to capture images that reflect the beauty of our natural world.

Landscapes :

Nature :

Bats : Capturing a sharp image of a flying bat isn't easy - since there really is no ambient light, its not so much a matter of shutter speed (since the burst from the manual flash will freeze motion) as it is a focusing problem - the camera is manually focused on an area where the bats will - hopefully - fly through. While these cropped images aren't quite as sharp as I'd like, they nevertheless illustrate that a bat in flight is a beautiful thing. (Note that in some photos, you can see the reflection of the bat on the pond surface.)

And why do most - if not all - of the images show bats with their mouths open? Because they are echolocating.

Birds :

Bald Eagles : There is a breeding pair of American Bald Eagles who nest at the north end of Bainbridge Island, several hundred feet atop a tree overlooking the Puget Sound. At that distance, its a challenge to get a sharp image using a telephoto zoom (and on occasion a teleconverter).

Amphibians :

Slugs : Slugs - so ubiquitous in the Pacific Northwest, they get a gallery of their own.

Life Aquatic : These photographs were taken with an Olympus TG-2 compact camera while snorkeling on O'ahu, Hawaii. While the image quality does not compare to the Nikon D7100 SLR (24 MB RAW versus 12 MB JPG), the TG-2 can be submerged down to about 50 feet without a special housing. Nevertheless, framing the shots was a real challenge due to the fact that the LCD screen was often difficult to see underwater (and there is no viewfinder).
